ARTIST STATEMENT

Hi, I'm Scott.

I'm an artist living in Vancouver, British Columbia.

I've been an artist, practicing meditation and yoga for over fifty years, and over that time, the most important thing that I've learned is that the best ideas don't come from my mind. The best ones come when I get out of the way and let go.

How the magic happens

Curiosity, intuition, accidents, and mistakes are the greatest tools for my art life.

Everything I create comes from a deep curiosity about human consciousness, spiritual practice, light, time, and the natural world, and our place in it.

It usually starts as an itch, a faint musing in the back of my mind about something, but it's not a something quite yet. I get curious, and start poking around, and that faint tickle turns into

what if…

Ancient light

The 10,000 Years project started exactly like that back in 2019. I was curious about the sunlight that surrounds us, its nature, and how old it actually is. It turns out it's quite old.

A photon, the basic unit of light, is born in the heart of the Sun and takes up to 100,000 years to reach us here on Earth.

Ancient light, stars, the rotation of the planets, and learning how to draw a simple line on old photo paper with only sunlight.

For the last seven years, I have been deep in the rabbit hole that curiosity lets you fall into. I wanted to create a body of work that felt both ancient and modern, using the sun's ancient light.

I wanted the work to be simple, primitive, and timeless, like it was discovered, not made.

To do that, I needed to learn how to draw with solar radiation without burning the studio down.

Primitive tools. A mirror, a plastic lens, a wooden box, and a willingness to let a river of mistakes flow before anything sparks the aha moment.

No canvas, no paint, just light.

The unexpected gift

This new project, The Inner World, is a direct extension of those seven years of creating connection between the deeply human and the natural world: shadows, light, and the surprises within them.

I wanted to create artwork that was joyful, affordable, born from the heart of my

previous explorations.

And boom;

Art for Your Heart was born.
